Edit Did You Know? Trivia One of three cinema movies where actor Gene Hackman played a character with the first name of "Sam".
Goofs When Adam meets with Mrs. The movie consist of 13 separate episodes each handling a period between and The length of these periods varies from one day to some years.
It tells the story of a group of people in Munich mostly music and film students. Every episode focuses on a different character from the group, although the main storyline and character, the young composer Hermann, continues.
The movie tells a story in many different levels about love, friendship, misfortune, loss, art, politics, history with important historic events of the decennium in the background.
It was the most costly and ambitious drama production in German television, although very cinematographic.
Believed to be partly autobiographic. Eight years later, he came up with a sequel, The Second Heimat: Chronicle of a Youth, which is even more astounding than its predecessor.
Actually, it's not really a sequel. It's more of a "midquel", as it covers events that took place between the ninth and eleventh episode of the first Heimat cycle.
The Second Heimat begins in , four years after Hermann Simon Henry Arnold was separated from his first love, Klarchen, courtesy of his intolerant mother and elder brother the controversy had to do with him being a minor, while she was about Still angered by those events, the young man vows never to fall in love again a grandiose, if creepy scene , and decides to move to Munich like the director himself did in approximately the same period , hoping to become a professional composer after a few years spent at the music academy.
He stays in Munich for ten years, and the thirteen two-hour episodes of Heimat 2 cover that time-frame, each of them focusing on a different person among Hermann's fellow students, people who, like him, are searching for a "second home country", be it music, film or something else, in which they can finally live peacefully.
Like the first Heimat, this second cycle is a perfect union of film and television: the episodic structure and the various romantic subplots make it look like a soap opera, in fact The Second Heimat needs to be seen in its entirety to be successfully embraced, whereas some chapters of Heimat 1 could be viewed as separate stories in particular, the one concerning Hermann's teenage years.
This time, Reitz seems to be more pessimistic regarding his characters at one point, Hermann is so disillusioned he says: "The Beatles are much better than us!
The decade he's exploring is not suitable for everyone, as some are scarred in dramatic ways by the pivotal events of the '60s the '68 revolution especially.
Reitz also seems to have made this mini-series specifically for movie-buffs, given the numerous film references including a brilliant Casablanca quote and clever in-jokes one episode is set in Venice, whose film festival had an important part in the Heimat saga's success.
And since , film-lovers have never ceased to thank him for delivering 26 of the most compelling hours ever committed to celluloid.

Enemies Of The Heir, Beware". Written by Soumitra. Prepare yourself for a darker fantasy this time with some harrowing and scary special effects.
Apparently J. Rowling has hit upon the fact that kids love to be scared stiff along with being entertained by touches of humor and excitement--although I think her imagination works overtime on scenes like the vomiting fit for Ron, one of the more tasteless sequences.
And apparently the makers of this Potter film have met the challenge of providing spiders and snakes that are hideous enough to have Ron and the audience in a fit of hysterics.
It's all here--the main events anyway of the Rowling book--and for extra measure they've given a much needed humorous role to Kenneth Branagh who has great fun with his role as the self-loving Gilderoy Lockhart.
The only real drawback is that Maggie Smith has very little to do--but the main chores belong to Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint who continue to charm as the three leads.
Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy has a commanding presence and an amusingly wicked final scene involving the computer created Dobby who steals every scene he's in.
Should keep Potter fans happy--and for a movie two-and-a-half hours long it moves along at a brisk pace from one adventure to another with what by now appears to be mechanical skill, thanks to artful direction by Chris Columbus who knows how to keep this sort of thing moving.

Written by Ulf Kjell Gür. Horrible title for an amazing film. It's drawn a lot of comparisons to The Silence of the Lambs, which makes sense since it was obviously inspired by it there's even a little nod to it with the main character having the novel on her bookshelf ; the bleak and unrelenting tone as a backdrop for a story with a strong but tortured female detective hunting a killer.
But the film shouldn't be dismissed as a rip-off or anything close; it's a fantastic journey into the darkness with a strong performance to bring you in.
The story has an interesting approach in bringing us into the world, with a drunk driving incident being the catalyst for a murder and thus bringing the police force into it all.
Unlike most tales of this nature though, we get a lot of focus into many different subplots involving a romantic relationship, the struggle of the men driving the car responsible for a murder and ultimately into the mind of the killer themselves.
It gets a little cluttered in the middle with all of these strains going on, but ultimately it boils back down to a fascinating thriller with great characters and a powerful lead performance.
Melanie Laurent is absolutely dynamite here, portraying the lead with a tortured soul and a strong surface front. She always has you focused on her, studying her expressions and being right with her through every emotion she faces.
This is a gripping and very bleak mystery that keeps your mind racing along with your pulse; the final fifteen minutes are some of the most intense I've seen in some time.

His daughter played by Faye Dunaway - who witnessed him murder a black man in an incident years before - has been haunted with guilt, believing that if she had let him know that she was present, he would never have killed the man in front of her eyes.
She feels guilty, believing that she's responsible for the man's death and finally asks her father as she visits before his execution whether he would have killed the man if he had known she was there.
He says he would have. It sounds like a harsh and cold statement coming from Cayhall, and yet he's really telling her that it wasn't her fault and she shouldn't feel guilty over what happened.
I found that simple scene very moving - mainly because it seemed to be a lie. His body language seemed to suggest that he wouldn't have killed the man with his daughter watching, but he wanted to take away her feelings of guilt.
Perhaps, though, that also serves as the great weakness here - to me at least. Cayhall was a bad guy, but there seemed to be attempts to excuse him - especially with the repeated refrain that he had no choice but to become a hateful bigot.
His father had been one, his father's father, and his father as well. How could Cayhall have turned out differently after three generations of hate?
The obvious response which was strangely never voiced is that Cayhall's son Adam's father, who had ultimately committed suicide, apparently out of shame from the family's past turned out differently in spite of the four generations of hatred in the family before him.
The whole idea that Cayhall was destined to be a racist because of his upbringing grated on me because of that. Still, Hackman's performance was great, and Cayhall was an interesting character.
Chris O'Donnell was overshadowed by Hackman in this. He was all right as Adam, but perhaps lacked a bit of spark that might have brought more life to the movie.
The writers made a good decision in not developing a romance between Adam and Nora Lela Rochon. An inter-racial romance between the racist's grandson and lawyer and the governor's aide might have been an obvious direction to take, but it frankly would have been too obvious.
The end result, though, was that Nora was a minor character. Her place in the story seemed ill-defined to me.
There's a hint of some deep, dark secrets from the past that could come back to haunt some of Mississippi's political elite, but that never gets developed.
Many criticize this because it apparently strays quite liberally from the John Grisham novel on which it's based which I've never read I admit.
Well, this is a movie. Movies and books are different. You can't just take a novel and make it fit the screen, so adaptations don't bother me as long as the end result on film is good.
This was a good movie, and I appreciated the fact that while Cayhall's character was softened over the course of it, there was no real redemption for the character.
He played his part in the children's deaths, and he paid the price for it. Overall, this is pretty good. Sign In. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends.
