As long as Jack and Rose lived in isolation, a certain continuity could be maintained. But the introduction of Kathleen as her father's lover, and the news that she is to start attending a school in town, cause Rose to rage against the loss of -- what?

Kids use the fag tag on anyone the least bit strange. That he turns Rose down from utter disinterest seems facile.
He looks genuinely frightened. The charity with which he turns her down shows his wisdom, yet what he does to her hair is dangerous.
His failing to realize the danger, or his going ahead even though he does realize, shows his own naivety. Does Day Lewis ever speak with him?
Why exactly did Miller choose to make Rose the most dangerous of these characters, the only one to risk doing serious, even lethal harm?
Yes, she's Jack's "fault. Yes, she survives, but does she really? That "two years later" coda I didn't need. It tells me nothing, or too little.
I like her. I prefer her to Keener and sons, but what the coda tries to tell me I don't know whether to believe.

Looking appropriately gaunt for a dying man, Day-Lewis infuses his trademark feral passion into the role and comes up with some genuinely incisive moments, though Miller gives him little more the liberal hermit archetype to play.
Keener does not fare much better as her role is even more stereotypical than his, especially as Miller's contrived story turns make her acts more incomprehensible as the story trudges on.
Oddly, she plays a comic variation on a very similar role in this year's "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" and is wonderful in that.
Camilla Belle is a lovely presence as Rose, and she does some strong work with the coming-of-age aspects of her character.
Where the script fails her is in showing the motivation for her often extreme acts of hostility and manipulation to keep Rose's relationship with Jack isolated from the others.
As a result, she comes across as petulant and childish rather than the puritanical soul Miller would like us to think she is.

The short scene she shares with Jason Lee is perhaps the best example. Day-Lewis' Jack is outstanding in his own right.
My favorite scene is when he breaks down to tears before Marty; or the night he spent with Rose in the house he crashed down later.
